Built FormJoy โ€” a simple form builder for non-technical people. Drag-and-drop, clean design, embeddable. Built it over 7 months of nights and weekends. Free tier with limits, paid tier at $12/month.

The rational part said "it'll take months." The irrational part said "50 users on launch day."

First 3 months: 40 free signups, 0 paid. Month 5-6: starting to lose motivation. Then on a random Wednesday at 2:47 PM, my phone buzzed with a Stripe notification: "You received $12.00." A complete stranger. They found FormJoy on their own, tried the free tier, and decided to pay. I stared at my phone for 5 minutes.

Product Hunt launch (28 upvotes). Reddit posts. Twitter threads. Cold emails (0 responses). After the first sale: nothing changed strategically. I just kept building and posting.

The feeling you described โ€” that first stranger's payment โ€” is something every indie hacker remembers. Mine was $9.99 for a Chrome extension in 2019. I stared at the Stripe notification for 10 minutes. You're right that the psychological shift matters more than the money. $0 to $12 is the hardest gap in indie hacking. $12 to $100 is easier. $100 to $1,000 is just patience and consistency. You've crossed the most important threshold. Everything from here is grinding, and you've already proven you can do that for 7 months.

Before the first sale, every day without revenue feels like evidence that the product is wrong. After the first sale, every day without revenue is just a day where the next customer hasn't found you yet. Same situation, completely different emotional interpretation. Bookmarking this post for the next time I'm at $0 MRR.
