I track 12 daily habits in 3 different apps. The tracking itself has become my biggest source of anxiety.

โธ What I did
Started habit tracking a year ago. Currently tracking 12 habits: meditation, exercise, reading, journaling, water intake, sleep, screen time, stretching, vitamins, skincare, language learning, and meal prep. Using Habitica, Streaks app, and a Notion dashboard.
โธ What I expected
Accountability and motivation. Seeing green checkmarks would keep me going.
โธ What actually happened
For the first 2 months it worked. Then I broke my exercise streak because I was sick. The empty red squares made me feel like a failure. Now I wake up thinking about maintaining 12 perfect chains and the pressure is paralyzing. Some days I do NONE of them and spiral into guilt. The tracking that was supposed to motivate me is now my primary source of daily stress.
โธ What I've tried so far
Tried reducing to 6 habits. Tried a paper tracker. Tried "flexible tracking" with no streaks. The core problem: I've become more obsessed with the TRACKING than with actually DOING the things.

12 habits is clinically insane. Even the most disciplined person on the planet doesn't consciously track 12 daily behaviors. You've turned your life into a video game with 12 daily quests and then wondered why it feels like work. Here's what actually works: pick ONE habit. Just one. The one that makes the biggest difference. Do it for 30 days WITHOUT tracking โ just do it or don't. If after 30 days it's automatic, add a second one. The goal is habits that run on autopilot, not habits that require a daily check-in meeting with yourself.

"More obsessed with tracking than doing" is the modern productivity disease. I see this at the gym constantly โ people spending 10 minutes logging every set in their app instead of just... lifting the weight. The tracking is supposed to SERVE the habit. The moment it starts to STRESS you, it's no longer a tool โ it's a burden. Delete all 3 apps for one week. Just one week. See how you feel. I bet you'll still do most of those habits because they're actually part of your routine now. The apps are a security blanket, not a necessity.
