16:8 intermittent fasting worked great for 3 months. Lost 15 lbs. Then the weight stalled and my social life died.

โ–ธ What I did
Started 16:8 intermittent fasting โ€” eating window from 12 PM to 8 PM. Combined with calorie tracking (1,600 cal/day). First 3 months: lost 15 pounds.

โ–ธ What I expected
Continued steady weight loss. Maybe another 10-15 lbs.

โ–ธ What actually happened
Month 4: weight loss stopped completely. Meanwhile, the social cost was piling up: declined 3 brunch invitations, skipped a friend's birthday dinner because it started at 8:30 PM. My friend literally said "you've become the fasting guy and it's annoying."

โ–ธ What I've tried so far
Tried shifting my eating window. Tried adding exercise. Tried one "OMAD" day per week โ€” felt awful and binged the next day.

Progress Updates (1)
Had a conversation with myself (and my partner) about what I actually want. The fasting started as a health tool but became an identity. I was prioritizing a schedule over real life. New approach: flexible eating window. Most days I still fast 14-16 hours naturally because I'm not a big breakfast person. But if there's a brunch or a late dinner, I go. No guilt. The scale hasn't moved in either direction, but my partner is happier, I'm less stressed, and I went to brunch last Sunday for the first time in 4 months. Turns out eggs benedict with friends is worth more than a number on a scale.

Registered dietitian here. What you're experiencing is metabolic adaptation โ€” completely normal. Your body adjusted its energy expenditure to match your 1,600 calorie intake. The fix is NOT eating less (that'll make it worse). It's a "diet break" โ€” eat at maintenance calories (probably around 2,000 for you) for 2-3 weeks, then resume a moderate deficit. Your metabolism needs to reset. Also: the weight plateau doesn't mean fat loss stopped. If you added exercise, you're likely building muscle while losing fat. The scale lies. Take body measurements instead.

"You've become the fasting guy and it's annoying." Your friend did you a favor by being honest. Any diet that isolates you from the people you love is too expensive, regardless of the physical results. The people I know who maintain healthy weight long-term don't follow strict protocols. They eat reasonably, move regularly, and enjoy meals with people they love. Boring, unsexy, and it works for decades.
