Bought a gym membership on January 1. It's March. I've gone 4 times. Every time feels like everyone is watching me.

โธ What I did
New Year's resolution: get in shape. Signed up at a big chain gym on January 1. Bought new workout clothes, downloaded a beginner program from Reddit's fitness wiki.
โธ What I expected
Go 3-4 times a week. Follow the program. Get results in a few months.
โธ What actually happened
January 2: walked in, saw 200 people who clearly knew what they were doing, wandered around for 20 minutes, left after 30 minutes. February: went at 11 PM thinking it'd be empty. I still felt like the security cameras were judging me. March 3: did 15 minutes on the treadmill, saw someone I know from work, panicked, left. I'm paying $45/month to have anxiety attacks.
โธ What I've tried so far
Tried watching "gym etiquette" videos. Tried going with a friend. Tried a "beginner-friendly" class. Considered canceling and doing home workouts but my apartment is 400 sq ft with a cat who attacks anything that moves.

I've been going to the gym for 8 years. I promise you nobody is watching you. Everyone is either staring at their own reflection, watching a video between sets, or thinking about their own workout. The person who asked if you were done with the machine โ they weren't judging you, they wanted the machine. That's it. Here's what I'd try: go 3 times at the same time on the same days. After 2 weeks, you'll recognize the same regulars. After 4 weeks, you'll nod at them. After 6 weeks, it's YOUR gym too. Comfort comes from familiarity, not from fitness level.

The "downloaded a program from Reddit" is where it went wrong. Starting from zero with a full workout program is like learning to drive by entering a Formula 1 race. Here's what actually works for gym anxiety: go to the gym with ONE goal. Not a program. ONE exercise. "Today I will do 3 sets of goblet squats and leave." That's it. Takes 10 minutes. You get in, you do the thing, you leave. After 2 weeks of single-exercise visits, add a second exercise. Build the HABIT of going before you build the workout.

The cat attacking things on the floor is the best line I've read all week. Serious note: gym anxiety is so common that it has a clinical name (gymtimidation). If the big chain gym feels overwhelming, look into smaller studios, CrossFit boxes (despite the stereotypes, they're usually very welcoming to beginners), or even personal training sessions at off-peak hours. Sometimes the environment matters more than the exercise. Find a space where you feel safe first. Fitness comes second.
