My Figma UI kit is better than 90% of the free ones. But "better than free" still loses to "free."

โ–ธ What I did
I'm a product designer. Spent 3 months building CleanUI Kit โ€” a comprehensive Figma component library with 200+ components, auto-layout, proper variants, dark mode, fully responsive. It's genuinely well-built. Priced at $49 on Gumroad.

โ–ธ What I expected
Product designers need good component libraries. A well-built kit saves hours of work. $49 for hundreds of hours of design work should be an easy sell. Figured 50-100 sales in the first 3 months based on what I saw other UI kit sellers claim.

โ–ธ What actually happened
3 months. 8 sales. 3 refunds ("it's basically the same as the free ones on Figma Community"). Net revenue: $245 minus Gumroad fees. Meanwhile I look at Figma Community and there are 500+ free UI kits, some of which are genuinely good. My kit IS better โ€” more consistent, better auto-layout, more variants โ€” but the gap between "good free" and "great paid" apparently isn't worth $49 to most people.

โ–ธ What I've tried so far
Shared on Twitter/X (800 followers, mostly designer mutuals โ€” 15 likes, 1 sale). Posted in 3 Figma-focused Slack communities. Made a comparison video showing my kit vs top free kits. Created a free "starter pack" with 20 components to get people in the door. The free starter pack got 200 downloads but 0 converted to the full paid kit.

Selling generic UI kits is almost impossible in 2026. Too many free alternatives. The play is VERTICAL kits โ€” a UI kit specifically for fintech apps, or healthcare dashboards, or e-commerce admin panels. When a designer is building a banking app, they'll pay $49 for a kit that has transaction tables, account overview cards, and KYC flow screens already designed. They won't pay $49 for generic buttons and input fields they can get free. Specificity is the moat.

The "free starter pack โ†’ paid conversion" funnel failing at 200 downloads and 0 conversions tells me the gap between free and paid isn't clear enough. People download the free pack, use it, and think "this is fine, I don't need more." You need the free pack to be OBVIOUSLY incomplete โ€” like giving them just the light mode with a "dark mode + responsive variants in the full kit" tease. Make the limitation visible in daily use.
