Google Play rejected my app 3 times. Each time a different reason. I'm mass of going insane.

▸ What I did

I'm an Android dev with 4 years of experience. Built ScreenZen — a screen time tracker that helps people reduce phone usage. Uses accessibility APIs to monitor app usage and gently nudge you when you've been on Instagram too long. Submitted to Google Play.

▸ What I expected

Approval within a few days. I've published 3 apps before, never had issues. Read the policy docs, followed the guidelines.

▸ What actually happened

Rejected 3 times in 6 weeks. First rejection: "Inappropriate use of accessibility services." I explained it's core to the functionality. Second rejection: "Does not comply with the User Data policy." Rewrote privacy policy, added data disclosure. Third rejection: "Deceptive behavior — app functionality does not match store listing." WHAT? My listing literally describes exactly what it does. Each rejection takes 7-14 days to resolve and the appeal form gives you like 500 characters to explain.

▸ What I've tried so far

Rewrote accessibility service justification 3 times. Updated privacy policy. Simplified store listing. Filed a detailed appeal with screenshots. Got a template response each time. Tried reaching out on the Google Play developer forums — other devs commiserating but no actual solutions. I'm considering just distributing via APK and giving up on the Play Store entirely.

Been through this exact hell. The accessibility API policy tightened massively in late 2024. Here's what finally worked for me: submit a video walkthrough showing EXACTLY how the accessibility service is used, frame it as an "assistive technology" in your listing, and make sure your data safety form matches your privacy policy word for word. Also — call it a "digital wellbeing" tool, not a "screen time tracker." Google's own Digital Wellbeing uses similar APIs and that framing passed review for me.
